This is my go-to when I want something that actually tastes like takeout but comes together faster than delivery would even arrive. One pan, pantry staples, and it's on the table in 20 minutes flat.
What you'll need
- 1 lb flank or sirloin steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 4 cups broccoli florets
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated (or ½ tsp ground)
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water, mixed into a slurry
- 2 tbsp vegetable or avocado oil
- Cooked rice, for serving
How to make it
Whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger in a small bowl — this is your sauce.
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Sear the beef in a single layer for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
Add the remaining oil and the broccoli to the same pan. Splash in 2 tbsp water, cover, and steam for 2–3 minutes until bright green and just tender.
Return the beef to the pan, pour in the sauce, and bring to a simmer.
Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook 1–2 minutes, stirring, until the sauce thickens and coats everything.
Serve hot over rice. That's it — dinner's done.
